In a world (Forgotten Realms, Sword Coast, mostly Waterdeep) where magic is EVERYWHERE, most labour should just reasonably done by magic. Want to open a washing business? Good luck competing with the dude with prestidigitation. Want to have a gritty world with disease and sickness? One friendly neighbourhood healer and that's no going to work.
We mainly don't try to think about this kind of stuff too deeply or the world just begins to seem absurd. For example, mages were labeled as "Ranged' for these kind of abilities while rogues were "Melee". Holy paladins were 'ranged' but Mistweaver monks were 'melee'. It was a case where you had to consider your positioning as a ranged character for a host of things, not just a character at range. Is that still a thing...or are boss abilities really truly spatial in their execution? If it is a thing, it just seems like poor encounter design. If it's not a thing, a everything is spatial, I really don't see how something like this wasn't eventually going to happen, given the inherent imbalance in flexibility. :(Old_Hobohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06591892158358579099noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1305372753022597815.post-47984515914779805612020-12-19T09:41:21.522-08:002020-12-19T09:41:21.522-08:00...and? In my game, Rationalism gives +100% science from campuses, which makes Research Labs provide +10 science vs. the +3/+8 that you've been complaining about.

Maybe I need to get the expansion to fully appreciate your articles. And possibly it just makes for a better game, like with the Civ5 expansions.

I still always take Rationalism as +100 science is just too good. There are a few base game policies that just seem generally amazing in terms of culture and gold return, which bugs me. My cities have nothing to do in the late game because the game will end in 20-40 turns. And the AI is ridiculously easy to beat in combat. Only playing at King level while I learn, but when my Modern Armor crosses the world to take down your capital's defence of crossbowmen, then something has gone awry.

It's weird - it seems like these issues are obvious. The basic math of whether a building is good isn't hard. So why were they ignored?

Much like when I play sub-optimally in Gloomhaven to be flavourful, I will do the same in Civ6. The first time I pillaged for 200 light bulbs or 300gp I thought, "this is incredible - should I just be doing this?", but it's not flavourful, as you indicate.

But I know you want to play optimally so the options shouldn't be there if they're not intended to be used, and I agree.

30 years they've been making the game and it has these kinds of fundamental flaws?Vienneauhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09647759933462318708noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1305372753022597815.post-61822681718567317122020-12-19T08:49:10.047-08:002020-12-19T08:49:10.047-08:00Of my two games, one was with Rome, with Baths, an...Of my two games, one was with Rome, with Baths, and that was my second game, so I didn't even question the value of aqueducts. It seemed like housing was something I wanted - I hate the idea of having food production go to waste!

But the Internet seems to agree that aqueducts aren't too useful. Huh. I too thought...I've just started playing Civ6!

I too thought workshops looked awful, but it seems like every building is kind of awful with really low RoE.

The one thing about workshops is that in theory you can increase your production through policies, so if you're getting +50% to build unit X, then +2 production becomes +3 for a while.

It's not a huge difference, but I'm starting to think, after just playing two games, that optimizing policy changes to match planned builds is important.

Also, if you're doing the space race, speed to produce is relevant I think? So you want cities with high production so you can build the components quickly, so there's a non-financial benefit? Of course, you only need 3 cities for space, which aligns with the three workshops.

So I guess you really want workshops so that you can build factories, which you want to centralize to maximize return. So the workshop doesn't just give 2 production, it enables +3 production (or whatever) to every city within 6 hexes?Vienneauhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09647759933462318708noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1305372753022597815.post-20006665082273390142020-11-19T05:27:48.982-08:002020-11-19T05:27:48.982-08:00Thank you very much... The 3 auto-succeeds...I agree with you on this one. The 3 auto-succeeds breaks my immersion as the number seems arbitrary, and it becomes a metagame of baiting the DM with fails that seem like they need to be reversed, so that you can hit with the real spell later.

Advantage on all saves is already a thing - it's called Magic Resistance in 5e.

The demilich does happen to be immune to stun and all the other conditions. One of the very few creatures immune to stun, which, as you say, makes the monk stun ability ridiculous.

Looking at this from another perspective, characters should maybe be more well rounded? Spells don't work, so the warlock uses a weapon. When magic doesn't work, your character became useless (earlier) and when saving throws auto-succeed, you become ineffective. Maybe your tight and optimized character focus has a flaw when that focus is disabled?Vienneauhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09647759933462318708noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1305372753022597815.post-91685827884783708042020-08-23T12:12:12.173-07:002020-08-23T12:12:12.173-07:00I love the way you shared the information. Not that ridiculous is allowed because magic allows anything, but that magic is formed by intent instead of physics, but ultimately, magic and physics can't easily be reconciled without dramatically changing how effective spells are and the intuitive understanding of what would happen if you banished someone for 10 seconds while on a moving ship (or moving planet).Vienneauhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09647759933462318708noreply@blogger.com
